Macedonians comprise approximately 58% of the North Macedonian population — South Slavic ethnic group whose distinct ethnic identity has been politically contested (Bulgaria has historically argued that Macedonians are a sub-group of Bulgarians; Greece has historically contested the use of 'Macedonia' as a national name resolved by the 2018 Prespa Agreement that produced the country's renaming from Macedonia to North Macedonia and the recognition of the Macedonian ethnic identity).
