About Histri People
The Histri were an Iron Age people of the Istrian peninsula, the wedge of land at the head of the Adriatic now divided between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. They gave the region its name, held it from the early Iron Age, and dissolved into the Roman provincial population in the first centuries AD. No living community descends from them in any traceable line. Istria's later inhabitants, Slavs from the seventh century on, then Venetians, and today Croats, Slovenes and Italians, inherited the name and the hilltop ruins, nothing more.
What marked the Histri off from their neighbors, the Liburnians beyond the Raša river and the Iapodes in the mountains inland, was a dense network of fortified hill settlements, the castellieri, ringed with drystone walls, and the practice of cremating their dead and burying the urns in stone-lined graves. Their chief town was Nesactium, near modern Pula, which has yielded something no other Iron Age site in the region has: monumental stone sculpture, including a horseman and a woman giving birth, carved around the sixth century BC. The same town produced a bronze situla decorated with a naval battle and imported Greek and Apulian pottery, signs that the Histri sat near the Adriatic end of the amber route. Their language is lost. It survives only in personal and place names on Roman-era gravestones, which lean toward the Venetic north rather than the Illyrian south, though scholars still argue the point. Their gods survive the same way, as names on stones: Eia, Iria, and Histria herself, a personified land, most of them female.
Greek writers confused the Histri with the Ister, their name for the Danube, and invented a branch of that river flowing into the Adriatic so the Argonauts could sail home through it. One tradition had Pola founded by Colchians who gave up chasing Jason and settled instead. Rome's interest was practical. The Histri raided grain ships, and Rome answered with a campaign in 221 BC and, after planting Aquileia as a forward base, a full war in 178 and 177 BC. Livy records that the Histri overran the Roman camp in a surprise attack, then lost it when they found the wine and drank themselves insensible. The war ended at Nesactium, where the consul Gaius Claudius Pulcher diverted the stream that watered the town. King Epulon fell on his sword as the walls gave way, and the defenders killed their own families rather than see them enslaved. Istria became Roman, later part of Augustus's tenth region, Venetia et Histria, and the Histri faded into the people who built Pula's amphitheater.
