About Enxet People
The word enxet means person, and so does enlhet: the same word after a sound shift, and the split marks the two halves of one people. Enxet Sur live in the low Chaco near the Paraguay River, flat palm savanna that floods in the wet season and bakes in the dry. Enlhet Norte live inland, in the thorn scrub of the central Chaco where water has to be caught and stored. Outsiders called both of them Lengua for the better part of a century, a Spanish name usually traced to the wooden plug men once wore through the lower lip, and it took a long time to shake.
Their speech belongs to the Enlhet-Enenlhet family, also called Maskoy, a cluster of about six closely related languages with no demonstrated relatives anywhere else. In the Chaco that is ordinary rather than strange: this is one of the most linguistically crowded corners of South America, and the Enxet have always lived among neighbors whose languages share nothing with theirs, Nivaclé and Maká to the west, Qom in the same department, Guaraní pressing in from the east. Before the fences they were mobile foragers and small-scale gardeners, organized in bands that moved on a seasonal round, with healers who worked by song.
Two arrivals reorganized that life. Anglican missionaries came up from the river at the end of the 1880s and stayed, which is why a people in a famously Catholic country is substantially Anglican today. Then, from 1927, Mennonite colonists bought the central Chaco in blocks and settled it, and Enlhet families found the land they had used all their lives under wire, and themselves working it for wages. Cattle ranchers did much the same in the south.
The result was landlessness, and the Enxet response to it has been legal and stubborn. Two communities, Yakye Axa and Sawhoyamaxa, took Paraguay to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and won, in 2005 and 2006, after years camped on a highway verge waiting for a ruling to turn into ground they could stand on. Enlhet researchers have also published elders' accounts of the colonists' arrival in their own language, the other half of a story that had only ever been told by the settlers.
