About Dandarii People
The Dandarii were a Maeotian people of the lower Kuban River. They appear in the record between the fourth century BC and the first century AD, living in the delta country where the river meets the Sea of Azov, in what is now southern Russia. After that they drop out of the sources, and were most likely absorbed into the Sarmatian and North Caucasian peoples who came after them. Everything we know about them was written by outsiders. Their country was the delta itself, a flat maze of channels, reed beds and floodplain on the eastern shore of the lake the Greeks called Maeotis. Ancient writers listed the Dandarii with the Sindi, the Toreatae and other small tribes under the Maeotian label. Strabo described these peoples as farmers who were still as warlike as the nomads around them. No one knows whether the Maeotians spoke an early Northwest Caucasian language, an Iranian one or something else. The answer matters for a bigger argument: some historians count the Maeotians among the ancestors of the Circassians, and others think the evidence is too thin to say.
The Dandarii show up clearly in the sources twice. In the fourth century BC the rulers of the Greek Bosporan Kingdom, based across the Kerch Strait at Panticapaeum, pushed east and named the Dandarii in their royal titles as a subject people. That records a conquest, but it also shows the Dandarii were a distinct enough people to be counted. Then Tacitus describes a campaign in AD 49, when Roman and Bosporan troops were backing Cotys I against his deposed brother Mithridates. The army entered Dandarii land and took the town of Soza. Mithridates had abandoned it because he could not count on the loyalty of its people. The Romans left a garrison there and moved on against the Siraci.
That passage is the last clear sighting. Archaeologists have mapped many Maeotian fortified settlements and cemeteries along the Kuban, and some of them probably belonged to the Dandarii, but no site can be tied to the name for certain. What remains of them is a line in Strabo, a word in a Bosporan royal title, and a town in Tacitus whose people could not be relied on to back their king.
