About Savakot People
In old Ingria, a savakko was first of all not an äyrämöinen. The Lutheran Finns who settled the lands south and east of the Gulf of Finland in the 1600s split into two camps, and the Savakot were the larger and looser one. Their name points back to Savo in eastern Finland, though it came to cover settlers from other eastern districts too. The Äyrämöiset traced their roots to Äyräpää parish on the Karelian Isthmus and held on to that origin firmly. For generations the two groups told each other apart by speech and by dress, and that line lasted longer than outsiders would expect.
The migration was political. After the Treaty of Stolbovo gave Ingria to Sweden in 1617, much of the Orthodox population withdrew toward Russia, and the Swedish crown filled the empty villages with Lutheran farmers from its Finnish provinces. The newcomers brought eastern dialects of Finnish, a Finnic language of the Uralic family. Their new neighbors were Izhorians and Votes, whose languages were close cousins but whose Orthodox faith kept them apart socially. When Peter the Great took the region back and built his capital on the Neva, the Savakot found themselves farming on the doorstep of an empire. The old difference between Savakot and Äyrämöiset was already fading, and it mostly disappeared in that scattering.
Today the name lives on mainly in family memory, dialect research and genealogy. Descendants call themselves Ingrian Finns and live in Finland, Estonia, Sweden and across Russia, and many moved to Finland under the return migration that opened in 1990. The revived Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria and local heritage societies keep the folk songs, the costumes and the old parish names in use.
