The Hinukh are the people of a single village. A few hundred people carry the name. That is not the residue of some larger nation: the Hinukh were always small, one of the many separate peoples the eastern Caucasus produced by keeping valleys apart for centuries. What marks them off from their neighbors is their language. Hinuq sits in the Tsezic branch of the Nakh-Dagestanian family, beside Tsez, Bezhta, Hunzib and Khwarshi. Through most of the Soviet period it was recorded as a dialect of Tsez and its speakers as Avars, which was administratively convenient and linguistically false: the two share a great deal of vocabulary and still do not deliver mutual understanding. Hinuq has never had a written form of its own. Avar carries the mosque and the schoolroom, Russian carries the state, and Hinuq carries the rest, which is most of life. Linguists reached it late, and the first full reference grammar appeared only in 2013.
Islam arrived in this corner of the mountains later than in the Dagestani lowlands, and the Hinukh are Sunni of the Shafi'i school, like their neighbors. It settled over an older agricultural calendar rather than erasing it, so the ritual year in villages of this district has long kept the first plowing of spring and rites addressed to rain and hail, the practical worries of people farming steep terraces at altitude. Social life ran through the jamaat, the village community that ruled on disputes and grazing, and the tukhum, the patrilineal kin group that ruled on nearly everything else. Herding is the old economy: sheep driven up to summer pasture, hay cut by hand off slopes too sharp for any machine, winter grazing that once meant taking flocks over the passes into Georgia until the Soviet border closed that route for good. The 1940s brought harsher disruption, when the state emptied Chechen districts by deportation and moved highlanders out of the Didoi country into them, with return permitted only after 1957. The pressure now is quieter and probably more final: the work is in Makhachkala or further into Russia, the village drains toward the lowlands, and a language with a few hundred speakers has no margin. In Genukh itself it is still the first language children learn.
