About Asian Puerto Rican People

Asian Puerto Ricans comprise approximately 0.4% of the population per the 2020 US Census — a small but growing community. The Chinese-Puerto Rican community is the largest, descending from late-19th and 20th c. Cantonese immigration concentrated initially in Mayagüez and Ponce, plus 21st c. mainland Chinese immigration. Smaller Japanese-Puerto Rican, Korean-Puerto Rican, Filipino-Puerto Rican, and South Asian-Puerto Rican populations exist throughout the island. Concentrated in the major metropolitan areas (San Juan, Bayamón, Carolina, Mayagüez, Ponce).

Skin tone is Fitzpatrick II-III for unmixed populations. Hair is uniformly straight (Andre Walker 1A-1B), black to very dark brown. Facial features track East and South Asian source populations. Eye color is uniformly brown to dark brown. Build is intermediate. Mixed Asian-Puerto Rican × Puerto Rican-mixed populations show admixed phenotypes, increasingly common in second- and third-generation Asian-Puerto Rican families.
