About Urdu Pakistani People
Urdu Pakistanis (Muhajirs) comprise approximately 7% of the Pakistani population per the 2017 Census — approximately 17+ million Urdu Mother Tongue speakers, concentrated heavily in Karachi (the country's largest city, ~17M residents, where Urdu speakers are the largest single ethnic-linguistic community) plus Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other Sindh urban centers. The community descends from post-1947 Partition Muslim refugees from northern India (predominantly Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and broader Hindi-Urdu belt) who migrated to the new state of Pakistan. The Muhajir community has been politically and economically prominent in Karachi since the 1947 founding of Pakistan, and has a complex political history including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Muhajir-nationalist political party that dominated Karachi politics from 1984 through the 2010s.
