About Chinese Surinamese People

Chinese Surinamese comprise approximately 1.4% of the Surinamese population per the 2012 census — descendants of mid-19th c. Hakka and Cantonese contract labor (Suriname received the first Asian indentured-labor migration in the Dutch colonial Caribbean, predating the Indian and Javanese flows) plus substantial late-20th and 21st c. immigration from mainland China. The Chinese-Surinamese community has been politically and economically prominent — President Henck Chin A Sen (served 1980-1982) was of Chinese-Surinamese descent. The 21st c. Chinese-Surinamese community includes both descendants of older immigration generations and recent immigrants who have maintained close ties to mainland China; the post-2000 New Chinese immigration has substantially expanded the community.
