About Krio People

Krio populations comprise approximately 1.3% of the Sierra Leone population — descended from freed slaves resettled in Sierra Leone in the 19th c. (Nova Scotian Loyalists who came to Sierra Leone in 1792, Maroons from Jamaica who came in 1800, Recaptives liberated from slave ships by the British Royal Navy after the 1807 abolition). Predominantly Anglophone Christian. The Krio language is an English-based creole that became the lingua franca of much of West Africa.
