About Americo Liberian People
Americo-Liberian populations comprise approximately 2.5% of the Liberia population — the historic settler community descended from freed African-American slaves who emigrated to Liberia 1820s-1860s under the American Colonization Society. Politically dominant historically (the True Whig Party ruled 1869-1980) until the 1980 Doe coup. Distinct from indigenous Liberian populations historically though substantial intermarriage has occurred. Some Caribbean-descended freedmen also emigrated to Liberia in the 19th c.
