About Fur Sudanese People
Fur populations comprise approximately 2.5% of the Sudanese population — approximately 1.1+ million, concentrated in Darfur (the western Sudan region, the historic Fur Sultanate, ~1603-1916 CE). The Fur language is part of the Fur / Nilo-Saharan family. Subject to documented genocide during the 2003-2005 Darfur conflict — the UN Commission of Inquiry on Darfur 2005 found systematic ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Sudanese government and Janjaweed Arab-tribal militias against the Fur, Masalit, Zaghawa, and other non-Arab Darfur populations. The 2023-present Sudan civil war has produced renewed violence in Darfur with documented mass atrocities.
