The catalog in French, German and Spanish: 14,000 pages under their own addresses

Every section of the site, the peoples pages included, now has French, German and Spanish twins with translated addresses, and each page lists its alternates in the other languages.

On September 27 the pose catalog went live in French, German and Spanish; by September 29 the atlas, the countries, the measured trait pages, the regions, the language families, the fixed pages and all 4,076 peoples pages had followed. The site publishes about 14,000 localized pages beside the English ones.

Addresses are translated, section words included: /fr/pays/mexique, /de/stellungen/missionarsstellung, /es/pueblos/baluchis. Every page carries the alternate links to its twins and to the English original, so none of them competes with another for the same search.

A localized page is published only when every text it needs in that language is present. Where a translation is missing the page stays dark in that language rather than showing English under a French address.

Under the hood

  • The locale layer is one module: the languages, the section words and the routes that are locale-aware. The middleware rewrites only those routes; any other path under a language prefix answers 404.
  • Text lives in catalogs per section and loads as seed files at startup; a text a person has edited in the translation admin is never overwritten by a seed.
  • Names, headings and slugs are translated separately from prose, and the slug for a translated name follows the same rule in every language, with a collision check so that two peoples do not share an address in one language.
  • A self-test runs on every change: the routes, the slug rules, the count of pages per section per language and the completeness rule, each with a control that must fail.
